The 1st house begins exactly at the Ascendant. It's the border between you and the world: how you arrive, what people notice before you speak, the way your body takes up space. It is also the house of any beginning, the instinctive gesture toward what is not yet known.
A planet in this house
A planet in the 1st house sits on the person's face: they are seen through it. Mars here arrives with intensity and is read as direct or impatient; Saturn here arrives reserved and is read as mature before its time; Neptune here has blurred outlines and people project onto them whatever they like. It is the house where a planet is least able to hide.
The axis with house 7
Self and other. The 1st house is what you are alone; the 7th, what you become in relationship. Someone who lives only in the 1st lets nobody in; someone who lives only in the 7th dissolves into the partner. The work is to have an identity of your own AND the capacity for bonding.
