Numerology number meanings
What each number means in Pythagorean numerology, as life path, expression, soul urge and personality.
Every total is reduced by adding its digits until a number from 1 to 9 remains — except 11 and 22, the master numbers, which stay as they are. Each page covers the number on its own and its role in the four positions of the chart.
The four positions
Life Path (Life Path Number, Destiny Number)
The Life Path is the ground life has set you on. It isn't who you are; it's what life keeps putting in front of you: the kind of situation that comes back, the lesson that returns in different clothes, the field where your choices truly carry weight. It comes from the birth date, the one piece of information you didn't choose and can't change, which is why it tends to be the most impersonal and the most stubborn of the four numbers. It describes the road, not the car. The sum of all the digits in the birth date, reduced.
Expression (Expression Number, Talents)
Expression is the set of tools a person carries in their hands. It's the talent, the way of acting, the repertoire they answer the world with. If the Life Path is the road, Expression is the vehicle: it describes what a person works with, solves, creates and defends themselves with. It comes from the whole name, vowels and consonants together, which means it adds up what they want inside with what they show outside, in action. The sum of the values of all the letters in the full name provided, reduced.
Soul Urge (Motivation, Soul Number, Heart's Desire)
The Soul Urge is what a person wants when nobody is watching. It's the motive behind the motive: whatever makes a choice feel satisfying or empty even when, from the outside, the result looks the same. It comes from the vowels, the sound that leaves an open throat, what gets said with no consonant to hold it back. It's the most intimate of the four numbers and often the one a person finds hardest to admit out loud. The sum of the values of the vowels only in the full name (A, E, I, O, U and Y), reduced.
Personality (Impression, Personality Number, Façade)
Personality is the front door: the impression a person makes before saying anything about themselves. It comes from the consonants, the sounds that need a barrier, a tooth, a lip in order to exist. It's the filter, the clothing, the way they present themselves to the world, and also whatever they let others see. It isn't a mask in the sense of a lie; it's the part of themselves they judged safe to show first. The sum of the values of the consonants only in the full name, reduced.
