What the odu Okanran (1 open cowries) answers, advises and warns against, and which orisha speaks through it. Free online cowrie reading.

communication · misunderstandings · conflict · start of movement · crossroads · street

A single cowrie shell open, and it is Exu who speaks — the lord of movement, crossroads, and the word that comes and goes. Okanran indicates a crossed message: something was half-said, misunderstood, or is being carried by someone who shouldn't carry it. It is also the odu of the first step, of the spark before the fire. There is plenty of energy; what is missing is direction.

What it answers

Responds very well to questions about relationships with other people, noise in conversations, newly arrived proposals, beginnings, and the question 'where do I start'.

The advice

Go back to the origin of the misunderstanding and speak yourself, by name, without an intermediary. Choose only one direction and follow it. A word spoken is a word that moves.

The warning

Responding impulsively, sending messages through third parties, fighting over a version no one confirmed. And be careful with verbal promises, without backing.

In a yes-or-no reading

Tends towards no, but due to lack of clarity, not impediment. Suggest rephrasing the question after clarifying what is poorly communicated.

Other spellings and correspondences

Some terreiros associate Okanran, in addition to Exu, with the presence of Egun and Iansã. The most common Yoruba spelling is Òkànràn.
